How to Find Your IP Address on Mac

Your Mac has a private IP on your local network and a public IP the internet sees. Here is how to find the private one; the public one is displayed at the top of our homepage.

Method 1: System Settings

Click the Apple menu, then System Settings, then Wi-Fi. Click Details next to your connected network and open the TCP/IP tab. Your IP address is shown there.

On older macOS versions the same screen lives under System Preferences, Network, Wi-Fi, Advanced, TCP/IP.

Method 2: Terminal

Open Terminal and run: ipconfig getifaddr en0. On most Macs en0 is Wi-Fi. If it returns nothing, try en1, or run networksetup -listallhardwareports to see your interfaces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Terminal command for IP on Mac?

Run ipconfig getifaddr en0 in Terminal. That prints your Wi-Fi IP address on one line.

Why do I have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses?

Modern networks assign both. IPv4 is the classic format (192.168.1.5). IPv6 is the newer, longer format. Most home traffic still uses IPv4.
