How to Change Your IP Address

Sometimes you need a fresh IP: troubleshooting a blocked connection, testing something, or just privacy. Here are the methods that work, easiest first.

1. Restart your router

Unplug your router for 5 to 10 minutes, then plug it back in. Many ISPs assign a new dynamic IP when the connection drops for a while. Check our homepage before and after to confirm it changed.

2. Use a VPN

Connect to any VPN server and your public IP instantly becomes the server's address. Disconnect to go back. This is the most reliable method.

3. Switch networks

Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or vice versa. Each network gives you a different public IP immediately.

4. Release and renew (private IP)

On Windows run ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew. On Mac, renew the DHCP lease in Network settings. This changes your private IP on the local network, not your public one.

5. Ask your ISP

If you need a specific change (or a static IP), call your provider. Static IPs usually cost extra per month and are aimed at businesses and remote workers.

Frequently asked questions

How often does my IP address change on its own?

It depends on your ISP. Some reassign daily, others keep the same address for months. There is no universal schedule.

Will changing my IP unblock me from a website?

Often, yes, if the block was IP-based. But determined sites also block by account or browser fingerprint, so it is not guaranteed.

Does a VPN change my IP permanently?

Only while connected. Your real IP returns the moment you disconnect from the VPN.
